Relationships between terms represent several things, including;
  • similar or equal definition,
  • broader or narrower concept,
  • part of a larger whole
  • is authored by,
  • Instance_type
  • Sub_class
  • Sub-property
but can include really anything at all within the domain of discussion.

RelationExamples

Consistency becomes quite important when the intention is to merge two or knowledge domains or term collections.

Below is a comparatively short list of relations

DublinCore? Conforms To An established standard to which the described resource conforms. Intra-resource Relationship
DublinCore? Has Format A related resource that is substantially the same as the pre-existing described resource, but in another format. Intra-resource Relationship Not used specify the format, but to link to the pre-existing described resource, but in an alternative format, e.g. text and electronic versions or a book
DublinCore? Has Part A related resource that is included either physically or logically in the described resource. Intra-resource Relationship
DublinCore? Has Version A related resource that is a version, edition, or adaptation of the described resource. Intra-resource Relationship
DublinCore? Is Format Of A related resource that is substantially the same as the described resource, but in another format. Intra-resource Relationship
DublinCore? Is Part Of A related resource in which the described resource is physically or logically included. Intra-resource Relationship
DublinCore? Is Referenced By A related resource that references, cites, or otherwise points to the described resource. Intra-resource Relationship
DublinCore? Is Replaced By A related resource that supplants, displaces, or supersedes the described resource. Intra-resource Relationship
DublinCore? Is Required By A related resource that requires the described resource to support its function, delivery, or coherence. Intra-resource Relationship
DublinCore? Is Version Of A related resource of which the described resource is a version, edition, or adaptation. Intra-resource Relationship
DublinCore? References A related resource that is referenced, cited, or otherwise pointed to by the described resource. Intra-resource Relationship
DublinCore? Replaces A related resource that is supplanted, displaced, or superseded by the described resource. Intra-resource Relationship
DublinCore? Requires A related resource that is required by the described resource to support its function, delivery, or coherence. Intra-resource Relationship
DublinCore? Source A related resource from which the described resource is derived. Intra-resource Relationship
Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource.   Note: creator is used to represent the relationship authored_by in the Library domain and the possibly in the Science domain the inverse relationship would be author_of

Thesauri are arranged in a hierarchy from the general to the specific. Locating words with a free text search or alphabetical index that refer to the page of the term entry. See ISO 2788 and ISO 5964:1985

SKOS Broader   Relates a concept to a concept that is more general in meaning. By convention, SKOS:broader is only used to assert an immediate (i.e. direct) hierarchical link between two conceptual resources.
SKOS Narrower   Relates a concept to a concept that is more specific in meaning. By convention, SKOS:broader is only used to assert an immediate (i.e. direct) hierarchical link between two conceptual resources.
SKOS broadMatch   SKOS:broadMatch is used to state a hierarchical mapping link between two conceptual resources in different concept schemes.
SKOS broaderTransitive   SKOS:broaderTransitive is a transitive superproperty of SKOS:broader. By convention, SKOS:broaderTransitive is not used to make assertions. Rather, the properties can be used to draw inferences about the transitive closure of the hierarchical relation, which is useful e.g. when implementing a simple query expansion algorithm in a search application.
SKOS closeMatch   SKOS:closeMatch is used to link two concepts that are sufficiently similar that they can be used interchangeably in some information retrieval applications. In order to avoid the possibility of "compound errors" when combining mappings across more than two concept schemes, SKOS:closeMatch is not declared to be a transitive property.
SKOS exactMatch   SKOS:exactMatch is used to link two concepts, indicating a high degree of confidence that the concepts can be used interchangeably across a wide range of information retrieval applications. SKOS:exactMatch is a transitive property, and is a sub-property of SKOS:closeMatch.
SKOS example   An example of the use of a concept.
SKOS narrowMatch   SKOS:narrowMatch is used to state a hierarchical mapping link between two conceptual resources in different concept schemes.
SKOS prefLabel   The preferred lexical label for a resource, in a given language.
SKOS related   Relates a concept to a concept with which there is an associative semantic relationship.
SKOS relatedMatch   SKOS:relatedMatch is used to state an associative mapping link between two conceptual resources in different concept schemes.
SKOS semanticRelation   Links a concept to a concept related by meaning. This property should not be used directly, but as a super-property for all properties denoting a relationship of meaning between concepts.
SKOS definition   A statement or formal explanation of the meaning of a concept.

Note The statement order or direction (when diagramming indicated with an arrow) is usually significant to the reading, and therefore interpretation of the relationship.

TopicMaps Association   A relationship between topics
TopicMaps Occurrence   One or more information resources that are deemed to be relevant to the topic in some way
TopicMaps Scope   The context of the topic characteristics
TopicMaps Topic Type   Topics can be categorized according to their kind
    Association Type

Note Topic Map statement order is not significant; relationships are multidimensional, so the role that each topic (entity) plays in the relationship can be defined.
