Welcome to the Ants Wiki
Ants are one of the most abundant and iconic terrestrial animal groups in Australia and yet they are biologically and taxonomically poorly understood. Addressing some of these knowledge gaps will provide information essential for conservation agencies and other organizations working in the areas of conservation priority setting, planning, monitoring, and management.
Ants are exceptionally diverse and occur throughout the country, and while all Australian ants are being studied at some level, special emphasis is being placed in this project on the genera
Camponotus, Iridomyrmex and
Monomorium. These are large, ecologically important, common and taxonomically challenging groups of Australian ants. Each group requires a slightly different approach to resolving the taxonomic issues and the research involves a mix of ecological studies, understanding of social insect interactions, and both molecular and the more traditional morphological studies.
